Course Description
COURSE DIRECTOR: Elena Plummer
GOALS and OBJECTIVES
This elective is designed to provide exposure to the diagnosis and management of common endocrine diseases including diabetes, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, pituitary disease, parathyroid disorders, adrenal conditions and reproductive disorders.
FORMAT
This elective is based on an informal preceptor-preceptee experience utilizing both the outpatient clinics and the inpatient wards of the Phoenix VAMC. Students will receive further clinical experience with the endocrinology consult service at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. Students will interact on a daily basis with faculty and housestaff of the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center/VAMC Internal Medicine Residency.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
***Mandatory Training*** Effective, April 2, 2012: All new Health Professions Trainees (residents, medical students, nursing students, dental students, etc.) will use the new MSE tool to enroll in TMS and take the Mandatory Training for Trainees (MTT) course. The website to enroll is https://www.tms.va.gov/plateau/user/SelfRegistrationUserSelection.do. The external LIBRIX site, where some students had previously completed mandatory training, will no longer be available for this training. There are four important pieces of data that the enrollee will need to enter during the self-enrollment process: VA Location Code: PHOVA POC First Name: Stephanie VA POC Last Name: Velarde VA POC Email: Stephanie.velarde@va.gov. Once you have enrolled, please complete the Mandatory Training by using the following instructions. From the Home page, hover over item in your To Do List to display the pop-up menu. Click Go to Content. Complete training per instructions. On the Online Content Structure page, click the Completed Work link. From the Completed Work page, hover over the title of the completed training to display the pop-up menu. Click Print Certificate. This data is critical to ensure that the student accounts are easily located during the Verification Process. Please fax your printed certificate to my attention (Stephanie Velarde) FAX 602-222-6494. TEACHING METHODS
Students will be evaluated on the basis of informal observation by the faculty over the course of the rotation, and by a written formal evaluation at the conclusion of the rotation focusing on knowledge base, interpersonal skills, clinical judgement and professionalism. Meals are provided. Reservations MANDATORY.
